Search ends after mistaken report of swimmer missing off Pacific Palisades

A nearly 90-minute search for a possibly missing swimmer in the ocean off Pacific Palisades was ended Wednesday night after authorities determined the object in the water was likely a marine animal.

A bystander reported seeing something, possibly a person, in the water about 9:05 p.m. near Will Rogers State Beach, according to Nicholas Prange of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The search was called off around 10:30 p.m. after it was determined the bystander may have seen a marine animal in the water, not a person, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Los Angeles fire and police departments and the U.S. Coast Guard assisted in the search, Prange said.
