The fight for justice continues: Friday demonstrations planned across SoCal

Southern California residents continued to fight for justice and against police brutality for another day of planned peaceful protests on what would have been Breonna Taylor's 27th birthday.

Taylor, an EMT and aspiring nurse, was killed after Louisville police officers fired more than 20 shots in her home.

Her family has filed a lawsuit stating she was asleep inside her Kentucky apartment at the time when officers executed a search warrant at the wrong address.

The officers involved in her death have yet to face any charges.

On Thursday, those who knew and loved George Floyd, along with prolific members of the African American community attended his memorial service in Minneapolis.

Floyd was killed while in police custody on May 25. His death was captured on video as a Minneapolis police officer kneeled on his neck for nearly nine minutes, despite Floyd asking for relief and constantly stating he could not breathe. The other three officers at the scene did not step in to help.

All four officers have now been charged, including second-degree murder for Derek Chauvin, the former officer who was seen kneeling on Floyd's neck.

Venice

There was a large turnout in Venice Friday morning as demonstrations participated in a sit-in protest from the Santa Monica to Venice Beach piers.

“I think we have a long way to go before there’s true equality.  I am happy that we had four policemen who were charged. I think it would help the community a lot to see them actually go to jail and be sentenced…but until then I think the protests are good. I think it shows a lot of people are willing to make that change and it’s long overdue,” a demonstrator told FOX 11’s Bob DeCastro.

West Hollywood

It was a large turnout in West Hollywood on Friday afternoon on all four corners outside The Laugh Factory.

Organizers said they did not plan a march, but rather, a birthday celebration for Taylor.

Demonstrators brought white flowers, symbolizing peace, and an array of signs.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
