16-foot python snagged in Florida Python Challenge

So far, 17 snakes have been caught in this year's Florida Python Challenge, but there's one that stands out among the rest.

That's because this catch happens to be just shy of 17 feet long, measuring 16 feet and 10 inches.

The snake was snagged by a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer, who reportedly spotted it sunning itself on a levy in the Rocky Glades Small Game Area on Monday.

And though the officer may have the biggest bragging rights thus far, it won't count for the contest itself. The rules say that FWC officers are not eligible for entry into the competition, and therefore cannot take home any of the cash prizes either.

The Florida Python Challenge began January 16 and will wrap up on February 14, so individuals and teams can still sign up for a chance to win thousands of dollars in prizes.

The month-long challenge takes place annually in an effort to help conserve Florida's greater Everglades ecosystem.
