3rd Street Promenade evacuated due to suspicious device investigation

Santa Monica police investigated a suspicious device left in a trash can in the 1400 block of 3rd Street Promenade Monday evening.

Authorities evacuated everyone at the Promenade between Broadway and Santa Monica Boulevard.

The 200 to 300 blocks of Broadway and Santa Monica Boulevard are closed to traffic, police say. The bomb squad is on the way to the scene.

Police say a suspicious device resembling a pressure cooker was left in a trash can. Just before 8:30 p.m., Santa Monica police said investigators determined the device was not dangerous and a threat to the public and would reopen the area around 10 p.m.

Businesses were impacted. Nearby Westside Comedy Theater tweeted that all shows planned for Monday night had to be canceled and would reopen tomorrow.

No further details were immediately known.
