City of Santa Clarita cancels curfew after seeing peaceful protests

Dozens of people gathered in Santa Clarita Thursday to hold peaceful protests over the death of George Floyd.

Several groups started gathering around midday, near the Westfield Valencia Town Center and along Newhall Ranch Road.

Officials reported no troubles with the protests, in fact officials with the sheriff’s department told FOX 11’s Christina Gonzalez that because the protests were so peaceful they lifted curfew.

The only issue reported in the area was a suspicious device that was found near a gas station.

During their investigation, the sheriff's bomb squad determined the device “did not contain any incendiaries'' but was “designed to cause harm to others when tossed into (a) crowd,'' according to the sheriff's station.

Throughout the day deputies were stationed around the Town Center mall for protection, and a contingent of National Guard troops were brought in as a “proactive'' step, sheriff's officials said.
