Man arrested for child abuse of 13-day-old infant in Santa Ana, police say

Jonathan Reyes (Santa Ana Police Department)

Santa Ana police say the father of a 13-day-old baby has been arrested and faces criminal charges of child abuse after the infant's mother woke up to find her boy badly beaten.

The incident occurred on Aug. 19. The infant was rushed to the emergency room of the Children's Hospital of Orange County with a fractured skull, multiple visible injuries to his face and body, and internal injuries, according to police. The 13-day-old also tested positive for methamphetamine. Police say he is in critical condition.

Jonathan Reyes, the boy's biological father, was quickly identified as the suspect and police say he admitted to investigators to using methamphetamine and was caring for the boy while the mother slept.

Police say Reyes denied abusing his child but made incriminating remarks. He had been out on bail for a robbery that occurred in March 2019, according to authorities.

Reyes was arrested and booked at the Orange County Jail. Police say he has also been charged with committing a crime while out on bail.
