Female football player remembers her late mom
CHINO, Calif. - With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, sports teams often suit up with pink in play. That was the case at a high school in Chino where the mom of the team's female kicker was being remembered.
Mackenzie Aguilera is a freshman who plays on both the freshman and varsity football teams at Don Lugo Antonio high school. Her mother passed away in September from breast cancer.
She's a soccer player who took up football in January. Teacher Irene Hemsley says "she's got a lot of brothers. The whole team loves her."
Sadly, Mackenzie's mom Deidre lost her battle with cancer before ever getting to go to a game. She did get to see her kick her first field goal on the varsity team through Facebook Live. Mackenzie's dad is also a Don Lugo grad.
Mackenzie received support from a famous Don Lugo high alum, former NFL kicker Luis Zendejas.
Mackenzie's idol is soccer's World Cup superstar Carli Lloyd who renewed the conversation this year of a female in the NFL with a 55-yard field goal at the Philadelphia Eagles' training camp.
